If you've never experienced counselling, or you've never had an astrological reading, you may be confused as to why on earth I decided astrology and therapy would go together. If, on the other hand, you have been fortunate enough to travel even a little way down both of these paths, then the idea of healing with astrology probably won't surprise you as much.
Counsellors and Astrologers share some mutual goals: providing insight, reflecting us back to ourselves, and assisting in personal growth and transformation. Each of these two professions has its own distinct characteristics, typical audience, and distinct set of skills, but when you combine the two? Well, that's where the magic happens.
I've been practicing as a counsellor since 2018. That’s about 3 years longer than I've been delving into astrology, and that doesn't take into account the 8 years of study in the field of psychology before that. It's safe to say that at this point, my psychological knowledge still outpaces my knowledge of the stars. However, I've noticed that the more I do deepen into my astrological knowledge, the quicker and more effectively I'm able to achieve things that I've always done with clients purely through clinical interventions.

1. Validation – How astrology helps clients feel seen
We all know that counsellors are supposed to validate us. It's pretty much the core requirement, other than keep everything you hear confidential, and don’t date your clients. Trust me, I am a darn good validator but if you compare my performance to your birth chart's? I look like a first year psych student checking the thesaurus on her phone under the table for another word for "anxious".
The truth is, I may be able to sit across from someone for an hour and get a pretty good read on their strengths, potential and what they exude out into the world, but often getting that person to believe in and value these things is a much harder sell. Now, what if I had a handy blueprint that I could pull up on my computer in front of that client and say, "this is what the universe marked you as at the moment you took your first breath"? Oh wait…
The stars reflect what’s already true inside every one of us, and when we can breathe into that sigh of this is who I was meant to be, it becomes easier to accept perceived "flaws", easier to own disowned gifts, and easier to work with our temperamental idiosyncrasies instead of against them.
2. Contextualization – How Astrology helps us make sense of our stories
A big part of what people come into my office to do is to make sense of their personal story - or individualized myth if we want to sound more fun and grandiose about it. (How does anyone determine where they want to go next in life? They start by taking stock of two things: where they are now, and how they got here.
In addition to taking a look at people's birth charts, I also help them decipher the current transits, aka where are the planets in the sky now? This is important, because the sky is a living breathing entity. The planets and asteroids continue to spin around through space, interacting with each other, as well as with each of our personal natal charts. Just like interpreting the birth chart helps to understand an individuals personality, a snapshot of the planets' positions at any given moment in time can tells us the quality of energy at that moment. This helps to normalize and make sense of what is going on in our lives right now (and even reasonable estimates of when these things might start to shift or change).
This can also be done for events that already happened, somewhere in our more distant past. Births, deaths, marriages, breakups, moves, major life transitions, traumas…each of these dates can be layered overtop of our personal charts to understand "why this event at this time?" We can track various cycles, relationships between planets, or activation of specific degrees that weave together an epic narrative that feels way more fun than "tell me about your childhood."
3. Common humanity - How Astrology reminds us we're not alone
We all want to feel like we aren't alone, right? Well, what if you could start to see how literally everyone is in it together? Sure, everyone will experience the current transits differently based on their life circumstances and individual chart, but when we're tracking the collective soup that we are all swimming in through the lens of astrology, we start to see similar themes affecting people from all walks of life.
I noticed this in my role as a counsellor before I ever began using astrology as a formal tool with clients, and I still see it all the time. When Venus went retrograde in the sign of Aries in March 2025, suddenly all my clients were realizing what they really deserved in relationships, and it felt like I'd never witnessed so many seemingly imminent breakups (don't worry - when Venus backtracked into Pisces, most of them were fine). Even in the vague terms that confidentiality allows me, when I can communicate any kind of sense that lots of people are going through similar challenges, my clients find this comforting. Even in my other job, where I just do regular-old counselling without all the star stuff, I'll sneak in things like, "Oh, it's funny, there must be something in the air. I've heard of so many people fighting with their families this week *cough first quarter moon in Cancer *cough What? Oh sorry, darn cold."
The Possibilities are Endless When Combining Astrology and Counselling
I won't pretend that astrology isn't a freaking powerhouse on its own, or that I haven't witnessed dozens of clients transform into unrecognizable versions of themselves with just good old-fashioned evidence-based clinical interventions. Yet, what I will say unequivocally is that the most synergistic magic that I have ever seen in my office was when I began to combine the two and they took on a life force all their own.
At this point, I know that I am only at the very beginning of uncovering the benefits of astrological counselling, and will no doubt have to continue to write follow-ups to this article for as long as I have the pleasure of exploring this unparalleled, dynamic relationship. Suffice it to say, however, that this work promises to crack you open and irrevocably change you in the most heart-achingly magnificent way imaginable.
